Thursday Art Club: It's All in the Details!

Spring Break is over, and Thursday Art Club resumed with a group of eighteen. Today we explored the difference a little extra detail can make!

I had lots of pictures of puppies, kittens, and fish on white backgrounds for the kids to cut out and paste onto a white piece of paper. They each drew an environment around their "pet" in pencil, with directions to keep it simple!

A few kids added a lot of early details, but I wasn't too worried about them. The "keep it simple" rule was directed more toward the kids that are fearful of mistakes, and overwhelmed by the amount of detail they want at the end of the project. By telling them to set a low goal at first, they felt less intimidated by the end result they felt they were "supposed" to have.

I take every opportunity I can to address the issue of fear when it comes to developing artistic skill. When they say, "I'll never be that good," I always reply, "That's your fear talking."

Sharpie time! Some kids had a better understanding of spatial relationships than the younger ones...

...but it's those smiles that make all the difference. :)

(Poor dog!)

Color time.

I have no idea what's going on here.

It's great to see them be proud of their work.

That wraps up the project. Just in time for a little intellectual reading.

That's all, folks.
